the journey

Mr. Manpreet Marhas

From a passion for speed to a mission to create champions.

Every champion has a beginning. Some begin with a dream. Some begin with a pair of skates. And sometimes, a champion begins with a failure. For Manpreet Marhas, one of India's accomplished speed skaters, coaches and mentors, the most important day of his sporting life was the day he came last in a skating race. What looked like defeat at the time became the beginning of a lifelong journey — a journey that would take him from the roller rinks of Nagpur to international championships, from representing India to coaching elite athletes, and eventually to building a vision around the next generation of skaters through MISRIS — Manpreet International School of Roller & Ice Skating.

The Beginning

Where It All Started

Born and raised in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Manpreet grew up with a natural love for sports and the arts. As a child, he was drawn to horse riding, basketball and painting. Skating entered his life almost casually. At the age of five, skating was introduced to him as part of his school activity. He wasn't particularly serious about it. He simply continued skating, enjoying the movement and freedom without imagining where it might eventually lead. Then came one particular day that changed everything. A school skating champion challenged young Manpreet to a practice race. Confident — perhaps a little too confident — Manpreet accepted.

"He lost. Not just lost. He came last."

What initially felt like an embarrassing defeat became the greatest turning point of his life. Sometimes, as the saying goes, good luck comes disguised as failure. That day, failure gave Manpreet something victory could not have given him — a reason to prove himself.

The Bigger Vision

MISRIS

MANPREET INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF ROLLER & ICE SKATING

Manpreet eventually realised that his greatest contribution to skating might not be another medal of his own. It could be the creation of many future champions. That vision became MISRIS

"Don't just teach a child to skate. Teach the child to become a better athlete through skating."

The academy evolved into a training environment where young skaters could discover their abilities, develop discipline and pursue skating seriously. Training encompasses the many dimensions required to develop a competitive athlete — including skating technique, rink practice, road practice, fitness, conditioning, endurance, discipline and championship preparation.

The Journey

From playing to flying

By the age of seven, Manpreet was darting around the roller rink so quickly that his coach would sometimes have to chase him just to tell him to slow down. His natural speed and growing technical ability caught the attention of his coach, who suggested to his parents that Manpreet should move towards competitive skating.

A New Chapter

Roller Surf

Manpreet’s journey in speed sports has expanded into Roller Surf, a dynamic new discipline combining speed, control, and surfing-inspired movement on wheels.

As a key figure with Roller Surf India, Manpreet contributes to the sport's national growth through athlete development, coaching, and certification programs. A major milestone was the inaugural Roller Surf Freestyle Open National Championship in 2025, which introduced competitive freestyle roller skating on a go-karting track, marking a new evolution in his lifelong passion for movement.

Looking ahead, the movement aims to establish a robust nationwide ecosystem complete with state associations and structured referee training. By nurturing young talent and expanding competitive platforms, this initiative is set to shape the future of extreme sports across the country. Ultimately, it bridges Manpreet’s rich coaching legacy with an exciting, fast-growing frontier of wheeled athletics.

It is an opportunity to create a new sporting culture and inspire the next generation to roll beyond limits.

Beyond Medals

A medal represents one moment. Character lasts a lifetime.

His coaching philosophy therefore goes beyond competition results. He believes athletes should learn how to prepare, respect their competitors, handle pressure, accept defeat and continue improving after victory. The goal is not simply to produce fast skaters. The goal is to develop complete athletes and confident individuals.

Supporting Dreams

"Talent can come from anywhere. Opportunity should too."

Another important part of Manpreet's journey has been his belief that talent should not be limited by circumstances. He has supported talented young athletes, including skaters from underprivileged backgrounds, helping provide opportunities for children who may otherwise have struggled to pursue the sport.

THE MAN BEHIND THE SKATES

Sportsman, in heart and mind

Beyond the rink, Manpreet is known for being down-to-earth, straightforward and transparent in his interactions. He believes in authenticity and sincerity in everything he undertakes. There is a healthy balance between his professionalism and his sense of fun, but when it comes to skating, his approach remains disciplined and focused. He considers himself a sportsman at heart and in mind. Even today, he maintains a disciplined approach towards diet, nutrition and fitness. For him, skating has never been only about competition. It has been a way of life — one that has helped him maintain discipline, physical fitness, mental focus and overall well-being.
